⚡️TUESDAY TRACK OF THE DAY: PATRICK COWLEY - MENERGY ⚡️

“Happy June party people! We’re dancing into Pride month today with a cut from an electronic music pioneer, the late great Patrick Cowley. Patrick is perhaps best known for his work with the iconic Sylvester and his epic synth-driven remix of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” . Today’s Track of the Day, “Menergy” , is one of Patrick’s best known solo cuts with Patrick’s partner in crime Sylvester providing the vocals; this is a high octane affair typifying the Hi-NRG genre with its pulsing tempo, synth arpeggios and a euphoric chorus melody.

Patrick and his Hi-NRG contemporaries created the soundtrack to gay club nights all over the United States in the 1980s with tracks like Menergy, especially in San Francisco where the style originated. SF is where Cowley spent his adult years as an out man and as a sought-after professional in the industry. Whether scoring a gay porn film or working with Donna Summer for a disco pop masterpiece, Patrick’s sound is unmistakable.

A decade long resurgence of interest in Patrick’s career and in Hi-NRG music was ushered in by SF’s Honey Soundsystem crew and Josh Cheon’s Dark Entries label which has reissued and released a whole catalog of Patrick’s music posthumously. Go check out Dark Entries to learn more about Patrick and many other underground nuggets from the past.

We celebrate Patrick’s contributions to the dance music world on this Tuesday of Pride month. Turn this one up and celebrate the decadent flavor of Patrick Cowley in his prime. “ - BL
