TTotD: LUXXURY - Hello My Love

Updated: May 27, 2021

L.A.

One of my favorite edit series is back with a banger. Too Slow To Disco, out of Berlin, have consistently released fire edits from the likes of DoctorSoul, Dave Mathmos, Vibes4YourSoul, DJ Supermarkt, Jack Tennis, and Les Inferno. The latest release is from one of the OG’s of the genre: LUXXURY.

On the new 10” release Too Slow To Disco Edits 06, LUXXURY offers up two perfect edits for any intro or outro. But for my Track of the Day selection, I am going with Side A, which is a cut of dubbed out, spacey psychedelic funk. This mid tempo nudisco cut is, as TSTD says, “custom made for the sophisticated dancefloor.”

I first encountered L.A.’s LUXXURY, aka Blake Robin, DJing at a silent disco (dancers wear headphones) in Santa Monica. Pre-pandemic you would catch him opening top for Giorgio Moroder or the Juan MacLean. My 15-year-old son knows of him through his viral TikTok “Inside the Song” videos. Read up more on this multi-talented musician and producer here.

I love his edits as they are clearly made by a fellow obsessive crate-digger and editor. He answers the disco calling for the best-fucking-sound-around by producing “dance music for adults” with raw funky bass and grooves that are precisely laid out with emotional intelligence.

For those with a discerning ear like moi, you’ll immediately recognize this edit is drawing heavily from the brilliant Shuggie Otis track “Strawberry Letter 23.” With “Hello My Love” LUXXURY, like all of his controversial LUXXURY Edits, uses the multi-tracks/stems of classic hits to create dubby slow-disco versions. Like any good edit, it takes an OG source and delves deeper. Jump in.
